I have an ASEL and use for video switching into my camera application. I would like to receive audio remotely but the camera software I use doesn't provide streaming audio. What options are there to stream audio - independant from the video stream?

you could use media encoder... but the sound would not synch.
I remember that I tried media encoder to serve my video, but it wasn't as easy as my current setup. I'm not too worried about it being synced.... it's for the cottage location, so I'm most interested in hearing the water noises and also audio if it appears something's wrong.....
What do you uses for outdoor microphones? I still have some x10 cameras in commission and they can support audio (although likely crappy).
What are the devices that connect to the ASEL? Does the ASEL out to into the sound card?

ASEL is just a multi input analog switch. You can connect mics and cameras. Split the outputs (if using both cam/s and mic/s) so the connected mic/s go to your sound card.
You don't need to do this if just using mics or just cameras.
Ski and I use the PA3 mic from supercicuits.com. I put them in surface mount electric boxes outside and add a top hood to minimize the WX effects.
I think I posted our HS script to control both cams and mics in Ski's scripts section in this board.
