I was able to rip and edit the DVDs from Italy with no prob.
Last night I decided to watch them on my HT. I got error msgs saying something about 'the wrong locale'. Is that a DVD "region" issh? Never saw it before.

And if that's the case, why was Movie Maker able to deal with that?

I suppose I could rip one and try the new DVD write function of MM?

Sounds to me like the material you have on dvd was encoded as region 2 for PAL countries whereas in the US, you are region 1

You were able to deal with it in your video app because you had converted the video VOB file to MPG format - you may not have noticed any aspect ratio errors in the image.

You should be able to change the region coding on your DVD player if it is in a PC -
Athough here in the UK stand alone DVD players can be multiregioned, they play pretty well NTSC material back on tv's here because most modern UK supplied tvs have NTSC playback compatability whereas in the US, it is not so common if at all, to have PAL compatability replay on your tv.

Playing back on your computer PC overides in general these format problems.

You may find a region crack for your PC DVD player if it is not already enabled.

Thanks CK. I wasn't clear. The issue is on my 2-year-old DVD component player attached to my TV.
I can zip out and get another stand alone if that will help?

The odd thing is that my Italian friend who actually lives here, gave me the DVDs and I'm sure that he's played them here. He's overseas at the mo.

And, they were recorded in 2K5.

I'll ask when he returns.

Alrighty then.
Renamed the vobs to mpgs, used MM to create a project with all the chapters, then used Windows DVD maker to burn a copy.

That simple. Regional limitations went away.

Now all you need is that virtual reality set software I have!

It was made by a company called Serious Magic and is called Ultra 2 - however they sold their souls to Satan - aka Adobe just after I bought it and now it is sold as part of CS3 Suite for some ludicrous amount of money in the $1,000's
