Anyone here a HDTV expert?

Is there any advantage to getting a set that has a native resolution of 1080i?
I see that most sets are 768.

Big debate on which is better, 720p paints all 720 lines in one pass, where 1080i only paints 540 lines per pass (some say this is like 540p). I tend to lean on the 720P as being better. Of course they have 1080p's on the way but are big money now.

That's right. Native 1080p is on the way and I believe there are a few in-market now.

I'm waiting to see them and prob won't go hi-def for another year or 2. Once I do, it's a commitment beyond just the cost of the box. I have very specific width requirement for the outside of the monitor (not viewing size) and I'm going to need a cabinet maker to do the physical install.

So, you bet I'll be watching this closely.

I have been converted after 4 or 5 cautious purchases.

Other tech is in the wings.

Flux is what you use with Solder.

Seems to me like there are 2 viable choices... LCD or Plasma.

I've had a Sony 32" LCD for about a year now. While I don't watch a lot of TV, the image from the LCD sure exceeds my expectations (brighter, smoother, etc.).
