my new laptop insists on trying to log into my neighbor's network rather than my AP. His wireless is secured - otherwise I wouldn't care wink.gif

Once I disconnect from his and bring up mine, I no longer see his to disable or delete it.

Never encountered this before.

How do I kill my neighbors network connection?

The reason that this is a pain is that HS speaker.exe launches at startup, can't make the connection and bombs. Then, I need to go thru the above and manually launch speaker.

Look within your wireless interface settings. There ought ot be an option to ignore all other APs in range. Otherwise, use the 'manually enter/configure' the AP option. I'm pretty sure the settings are common to all WiFi cards. I use a Linksys system right now and the options menu is pretty much the same as my old D Link

P.S Don't allow windows to configure the settings.............. tongue.gif

Well, other than the radio config dialog at the device level, I have no included wireless management progs on this machine except Windows and a SecureEasy setup app that requires a compatible AP.

My Win '98 laptop has a config for its radio and there are no probs.

I took this laptop to our luncheonet yesterday where there are 2 APs within range.
I changed over to DHCP and left the workgroup name alone.
I got a lock on both but couldn't surf.

IMHO
The first thing you need to do is loose Windows from configuring your wireless. Get a real program from the device manufacturer.

Then get a sniffer so that you can check for open networks.

OK, I'll check Broadcom to see if the have any utilities. Maybe Gateway prefers Windows and didn't include any.

This is the 1st time ever I tried to use Windows for a radio setup.
Tnx.

When I visited Derek in 03, I used my trusty old Windows 98 laptop coupled to a Delorme(.com) GPS receiver. He is seriously in the stix! Beautiful area but off the beaten track for sure.

Anyway, that unit worked thru a serial port and software upgrades are no longer available. So, I got the latest (USB) model with TTS and VR along with Street Atlas (USA) 2006 for US$100.00. I think there's a Euro ver - not sure. I took the laptop & Earthmate GPS receiver for a spin several hours ago and am really pleased! The receiver is tiny, has a windscreen suction cup and is far superior to the original in acquisition time from startup and in sensitivity.

I was able to use my Kate voice for TTS ("turn left on ... in ... seconds"). Fantastic. The laptop doesn't have a built-in mic and I coudn't find an unpowered one laying about. I'll pick one up tomorrow and train the VR.

I'm heading in various directions over the next month and have been plugging in routes to call up on demand.

Happy camp... er, driver biggrin.gif

QUOTE (Jay @ Jul 26 2006, 10:20 AM)

Did that. Broadcom is strictly OEM. Didn't wanna mess. I'll work thru it. Will change LAN to DHCP and assign statics to all machines except the new laptop and work from there.

The LAN has always been static yet one of my son's friends arrived several years ago and was able to surf with no changes to her laptop. She prob had a radio-specific config - not Windows. Who knows?

cause the lp didn't come with one. I'd have yet another dongle hanging off it.

I put the lt on the passenger side floor of the bimmer and only have a USB cable running to the receiver.

Yes, I considered that.

Happy. tongue.gif

Delorme(.com) Earthmate GPS LT-20.
Was about to spent around US$800.00 for a dedicated unit for the cars but remembered how great the Delorme/laptop combo was - like 5-6 years ago.
This is the same price as I recall - and soo much better.
I believe CA's covered smile.gif Check the site.
