I remember the very first time I visited my family in Berkeley CA - I was in my mid 20's and fresh off the plane and in a hot tub drinking bourbon.
It was at the house of one of my cousins friends.
My cousin is a respiratory therapist and he was on call.
It was around 10.30 pm and he got a page to go down to the projects in Oakland - did I want to go?
Sure I said, so we set off in his pickup.
On the way, he slid out his handgun from under the seat and warned me about the projects.
We were to attend a call to a family, the father of which had dropped a lit cigarette onto his wifes oxygen hose.
When we arrived the police were just leaving and we entered to an interesting scene of chaos where the man was hopping around the floor telling everyone how he just got to smother the alight hose just before it reached the cylinder!
An interesting spiral burn mark was evident on the carpet.....
Interesting first evening in the USA!
