Hi Guys

As many of you may know, I've owned a small computer store and a small radio store for many years now. Business has aleays been OK. Last year I took on a part time job with CounterPath Solutions doing Tech Support for their VOIP products. This rounded out my work day, and paid a few extra bills.
For the past 6 months or so, the computer business has been really really slow... loosing money in fact.
Last week I was offered a full time job as systems engineer at CounterPath, which would mean closing or selling the stores, and changing what I have done for about 15 years. It also means that I might be getting into an area that I don't have any expertise. I've yet to get a complete job description, and find out exactly what is expected of me. (This is a new position in the company, no one has that job now)

I've been tossing and turning now for almost a week on this whole thing. I think I'm gonna go for it. I'm just waiting to hear exactly what is expected, and what I am expected to know.

Travel was promised to only be 3 or 4 times a year servicing fortune 500 companies. Possibly a trade show or 2.

It is a big concern... I don't want to be travelling all the time. I like it here...wink.gif

I have a SE friend who "only" travels several times a year. He's gone for weeks or a month or more at a time, all over the planet. He's not in software though.

having done both consulting for a Systems Integration firm for a number of years and working as an independant consult, I would say one of the biggest changes is having to work for someone else.

On the other hand, working in an environment that is partially "unknown" is likely a big and exciting challenge - one that would likely bring additional knowledge, a new perspective and a much broader skillset.
