I just installed a P4 930 Dual core 4mb cache cpu. So far it is running just under 3.9Ghz. Seems pretty snappy. cool.gif

Ski, aren't you a bit early? New Intel dual-cores are on the way.
They MIGHT even be faster than AMD's FX-60 chips. smile.gif

There is always something new... what CPU are you referring to?

I just upgrade too! Now running a P4 2Ghz with 512 mb ram! My hard drive went bad on the other machine that I built (was a AMD 2000). This is really smoking!

I just can't seem to spend more than a few hundred for a PC. Not being a gamer, just don't seem to get any benefit from a faster machine.

I went with a new ASUS board (A8N5X), a Athlon 64 X2 3800, 2GB of DDR400 memory, and a mirrored 250GB SATA RAID drive.

The X2 3800 seemed like the sweet spot for me. It wasn't real expensive, but had very good performance and was dual core.

My Homeseer box is also my mail server, webcam server, and file server for the rest of the machines in the house. I may have gone overkill, but I want this machine to not turn old too fast. Besides, this is fun! Viva la Newegg!

Sorry to disappoint, but my webcam is an integrated snapshot on one of my Homeseer pages, and the only way my wife would let me put it up was if it was on a password-protected page. The cam is actually between our family room and kitchen, but I guess she figures some day she will be running around naked down there and doesn't want a stranger on the net looking. Hmmm... That gives me an idea... biggrin.gif

What I'm actually using is a Veo IP camera, and a little app that someone else on the HS board wrote to interface to it. The problem is it has to run all the time with an actual stream from the camera, which consumes some CPU. On my old machine (a 1.3 GHz P4) it kept the machine almost pegged. On this new one, only my virus scanner can ever get the CPU above 10% utilization.

I have to travel alot for business, and it's kind of nice to be able to see the kids watching TV and then pan across to see the wife making dinner.
