I have a quick pc performance question for the guru's here on this board.( Skibum maybe)?

I currently run a Dell Dimension 2300 with a 1.6 mHz processor (Celeron) and 512 M of memory doing HomeSeer, Voip and a few emails here and there. No gaming or fancy graphics etc required at all.

ISP is currently the cable lite version but I am in the process of switching back to DSL full version.

The cable internet seems to slow during peak periods and that affects my Voip service also (echo's and sometimes the conversation seems to sort of stumble)

I noticed a deal for a new Dell 2300 with a 2.4 mHz processor (Celeron) but it has only 256 M of memory.

Am I going to notice $299 worth of speed improvement in Homeseer,Voip and emails or would this just be a waste of money ?

I can swap the memory to get the new one to 512 M I think and leave the 256 in the older machine for my wife to use (she has a dinosaur P3 400 now).

Thanks in advance,

.....no. IMHO Save your money.

Your present machine should be plenty fast enough to do what you want.

Sounds like a crap internet connection is to blame...

Ditto. I ran HS on a 350mhz W2K machine for a few years. Last year I put it on a 3gig Dell, and while HS was faster, it really wasn't that much faster. I think it has a lot to do with keeping the PC maintained and clear of clutter, etc.

I continue to run HS on a 450mhz machine with win2k server and I think it has 512mb ram. It runs IIS with Cold Fusion 5, Homeseer with Napco plugin and ATT voices with HSP on a W2C USB. I don't notice any speed issues at all.
