Wife wants me to get one for our new place. I told her it is too early in the game (price, features, HDTV availability in SC...)

Anyway, I want to keep up with the tech for maybe a year before I spring.

Here's what I 'think' I'd want. Caveats and assumptions are laced herein smile.gif
Consider all statements as questions.

I think I'd go for LCD flat panel.
1. This assumes that the refresh rate is/will be fast enough to overcome the horrific blurry and blocky compression artifacts in motion images I've seen in the past.
2. The manufactures have/will overcome hotspots from pixel loss on the display.
3. The screen should be I-1080. HD ready. But don't buy a tuner since Comcast requires a cable box anyway. (I have Comcast in SC, as well here in Gladwyne, PA).
4. The flat panel should have optical and component (RGB) outputs for both the control center(e) and PC interface.
5. The flat panel should have memory stick slots for digital cams or USB2 and FireWire inputs for digital cams and digital camcorders.
6. Plasma is an energy hog and a passing fancy. Or to coin a phrase, "TempTech".
7. Wait for Organic displays.

What say ye, noble forumers? (ooh! another one)

TIA

1. Not even close to an issue
2. hotspots will always have wi-fi
3. Absolutely
4. RGB is old hat
5. who cares, it will be hooked to a computer
6. Forget Plasma
7. No

IMHO of course.

unless Comcast's HD box offers that function. Then, we have another go-round with respect to audio and video recording.
I'm trying to connect the dots.

to augment question in a related way. I can't get surround sound here on TV broadcasts because the TV has no A/V outputs. I could use a VCR as the source and put the TV in monitor mode, rather than TV/Tuner mode, fed from the VCR. It could be a confusing WAF. So, we just get 5.1 from tapes and DVD.

cousin?

Well my wife has kind of, sort of suggested the same thing. I didn't know plasma was a 'temp-tech' thing. I've seen some low end 42" units for $2k (Panasonic).

Before I do that, I've been contemplating how to have a single PVR (DVR?) for the house that is accessible from any TV. I saw a post on the HS board yesterday about the Snapstream software that really got me thinking. I could push the output from the Snapstream box and modulate my own TV channel on the existing house cabling.

Anyway, sorry to get OT, just started the juices flowing.

Okay, who comes after cousin?

Here is the answer that caused the relatives subthread.
http://www.pvrblog.com/pvr/2003/12/comcast_set_to_.html

You record from the set-top box . Either with a built-in PVR or to something else thru its component outputs.

You probably want digital inputs, too. Either DVI or whatever the "copy protection" version is called.

DVI will give you a good connection from a PC. HD receivers use a variation of it. If you are viewing a digital source, this will probably be your best connection.
