I am replacing a hard drive in a laptop. I was thinking about creating a full WinXP backup of the drive, then storing it on the network, and then restoring it on the new drive after installed. Will this work? If not, what about some kind of cloning software? I am going from a 20gb to a 40gb drive if it matters.

Thanks for the help

I decided to go with Ghost so I could used a mapped network drive for the backup and restore.

dell laptop. All went VERY SMOOTH on the replacement. This drive is much faster. Overall, the machine is a bit faster, but there is still something fishy about it. Maybe just poor video memory as it is very sluggish in menus. For a 2ghz P4 with 512 ram and a 7200rpm drive it should be much faster than it is.

I wish I would have done an overall sandra index before the memory so I could see the total gain (although I don't know how to relate the index numbers to real world speed)
