I am replacing a hard drive and increasing memrory on laptop, and want to benchmark the system before and after to see what kind of improvements there are to the speed of the system. I need something that is preferrably free, and has a nice report output.

I was talking about system benchmarks, not bandwidth speed tests. I am using Sandra now, but wasn't sure if there was another one people use out there.

is it safe to assume a higher number in the index from Sandra means it is better/faster? I didn't run Sandra before adding memory to the laptop (256-512) but did before and after putting in a new hard drive. I went from a 20gb 4200rpm to a 40gb 7200rpm. I ended up buying Norton Ghost so I could duplicate the drive to the new one, these there are no software changes between the benchmarks.

I went from a 1367 to 1633 for total system index
and 15433 to 32734 on the file system index.
